What is Tencel™?

It doesn’t get more Aussie than fabric made from eucalyptus trees, right? As a proudly Australian owned and made company, Tencel™ ticks our boxes. But not just for its native origins. Tencel™ is the sustainable, durable, responsible choice for our Pillow Covers.

Naturally plant-based

Crafted from certified sustainably grown eucalyptus trees, Tencel ™ is made from wood cellulose through environmentally responsible practices to create a fabric that is soft, flexible, long-wearing and low-impact.

Strong and sustainable

Tencel™ fibres are renowned for their strength, moisture absorbency and durability. As soft as silk, as breathable as linen and even more sustainably grown than organic cotton.

Year-round comfort

Cool in summer, snuggly in winter - Tencel™ has unique thermo-regulating properties, helping to keep you and your bub comfortable in any season. Up to 50% more moisture absorbent than cotton, Tencel™ delivers a supremely comfy feel. Perfect for a restful sleep.

Smooth, soft and gentle on skin, Tencel™ is naturally luxurious. Poly-blends sweat, satin slips, man-made fibres pill. In contrast, Tencel ™ is long-wearing, so it looks - and feels - as good after repeated washing as when you bought it.

 

Tencel™ vs Cotton

Conventional cotton is a notoriously unsustainable crop. Traditional cotton farming is highly wasteful, requiring high levels of insecticides, fertilisers and irrigation. It takes 2700 litres of water to make just one cotton t-shirt, and the largest pollutant in traditional textile manufacturing is liquid waste, which is harmful to nearby waterways and soil integrity.

Tencel™ by contrast requires less water and processing than cotton.  Grown from eucalyptus trees sustainably farmed with minimal water, the cellulose fibres are treated in a closed loop system that produces no waste and recycles up to 99.5% of any  solvents used. Our fabric manufacturers uphold strict water management standards - recycling waste water from the dyeing process and treating any remainder onsite so that it can safely re-enter the environment.

What about organic cotton?

Conventional cotton crops routinely exhaust and degrade soil quality, as crops are grown in the same fields over and over. The resulting crops require more irrigation and fertilisers - creating an unhealthy crop and health concerns for farm workers. 

Organic cotton is grown without harmful pesticides or fertilisers, alleviating toxic water runoff and preserving the quality of the soil. Even better, organic crop fields are rotated to minimise soil degradation.

Organic cotton has a lower carbon footprint than conventional cotton, requiring less water, energy and fuel to produce and creating a fabric free from toxic dyes and chemical treatments. That’s why we choose premium Japara organic cotton for our Butterfly Maternity Pillows.

 

Certifiably smarter choice

Our manufacturing partners hold the highest eco credentials. Our fabric supplier is ecoBiz accredited, a Queensland Government CCIQ initiative prioritising reduction in waste and energy intensity, and their facility is part-powered by the solar energy they generate onsite.
